There are lots of reasons to host a dinner party. You might want to show off your new condo in Toronto, Ontario, or you might be entertaining co-workers or even management, an event that while social brings a bit more pressure to bear. The conversation will be what sets the dinner party apart from others, but you want the food and drink options to be perfect (if they're not, that's what may be remembered, no matter how impressive your basement finishing is!). Here are a few menu tips to help you get ready for a dinner party.
Don't try to force a diet on your guests! A lot of us are installing treadmills and recumbent bikes in our Mississauga townhouses and watching what we eat these days, but dinner parties aren't the time to make everyone aware of that. Your focus should be on the taste of the food, not its calorie count. It might make you shudder, but remember the guests are who you want to impress!
Don't try things for the first time. It can be tempting to try out new recipes for a dinner party, but any caterer will tell you that this is never a good idea. If things go awry either while cooking or in the taste, there won't be a recovery. Try out the recipe first a couple days before, if you absolutely must do something totally original.
Don't be afraid of premade items. A dinner party usually consists of the whole meal experience, from appetizers and drinks to dessert. You can save time, and increase the socializing, by taking shortcuts in certain areas. Appetizers and desserts are the main ones, although you can even cheat a bit by adding some of your own ingredients to a pre-mixed salad. Just because you're taking the time to prepare for your dinner, does not mean that you couldn't use some extra, maybe for your job designing house plans or to restock your baby's organic diapers.
The main thing to remember when organizing a dinner party menu is that the idea of the party is to socialize. You don't want to spend the whole time in the kitchen, so a few shortcuts combined with advance preparation can help make the evening a success.
